A Boston criminal defense attorney was arrested last week on charges that he attempted to smuggle heroin into the state prison at Walpole.

Kevin L. Barron was being searched prior to meeting with clients at MCI-Cedar Junction when corrections officers discovered “small packets of a powdery substance” in his possession. David Traub, spokesman for the Norfolk District Attorney, told the Boston Globe that the “powder” has been identified as heroin.

Barron, 46, pleaded not guilty to charges of delivering drugs to a prisoner, possession of a Class A substance, and intent to distribute a Class A substance. He was released on personal recognizance.

Barron’s lawyer, Elliot Weinstein, told the Boston Globe, “Kevin is innocent. He’s a good man. Someone took advantage of Kevin’s standing as an attorney. Kevin did not knowingly commit any crime.”
