A Gary auxiliary officer was killed last week when a fellow volunteer’s pistol discharged a round into his chest.

Kevin Weaver, 49, died of a single gunshot wound at Saint Margaret Mercy Hospital. The incident occurred at Deb’s Gun Range. Weaver was one of three volunteer officers training at the range at the time.

Police say reserve officer Gerald Horton, 52, was attempting to clear his pistol when he was bumped accidentally by Weaver. Horton’s gun fired, mortally wounding Weaver.

“He was a good officer, a veteran, and a good man,” Terry Smith, head of Gary’s PD’s auxiliary officer program, told local media.
