Maryland Transportation Authority Police say that one of the department's officers, Courtney G. Brooks, was killed New Year's Eve in Baltimore by a hit-and-run driver.

Brooks, 40, was a 13-year veteran of the department. He was working as part of a traffic detail near the interchange of I-95 and I-395 when he was struck by a Ford Explorer.

About six hours later, authorities arrested Kerri Joanna King in Elkton, Md. King has not been charged in Brook's death. She is a "person of interest" being held on a failure-to-appear warrant, resulting from a September drunken-driving arrest.

Brooks was the 83rd officer nationwide to die in a traffic-related incident in 2007.

He is survived by three children and a fiancée.
