Charlotte-Mecklenburg police report that a local Domino's pizza driver shot and killed an armed robber earlier this week.
The alleged robber, Demetrius Jerome Wright, died at the scene. Police say that he and another person attempted to rob a Domino's driver at gunpoint, and the driver opened fire. The driver's name was not released.
Wright, 25, was shot multiple times. No charges have been filed against the Domino's driver.
The incident may, however, cost the driver his job.
"It's against policy for Domino's Pizza employees to be armed on the job," a company spokesman told the Charlotte Observer. He added that no disciplinary action would be taken against the driver until after the police complete their investigation.
"I don't know if this employee has been robbed before, but we have had other employees robbed while delivering. We have had one (from that store) robbed…a number of months ago," the spokesman told the paper.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics says that food delivery is one of the nation's most dangerous jobs. Statistics for Charlotte show that one food delivery person was robbed per week in 2007.
