A firearms instructor accidentally shot and killed a recruit at the North Central Georgia Law Enforcement Academy in Cobb County after bringing a loaded gun into the training building, which is a violation of safety rules.

Tara Drummond, 23, was a recruit with the Kennesaw (Ga.) Police Department. She died from one shot to the chest, said Cobb County Sheriff Neil Warren.

Warren says ammunition is not allowed in the building and that training is conducted using red, hard plastic replicas of firearms.

The instructor will be on paid leave until the investigation into the incident has been completed.
