Illinois State Police Sees Dramatic Results by Upgrading to NEC's Latest AFIS Technology

Arlington, Virginia -- NEC Technologies, Inc., a biometrics pioneer and world leader in the development, marketing and implementation of Automated Identification System (AFIS) technology for law enforcement, today announced that the Illinois State Police (ISP) has experienced a significant increase in the number of investigative leads generated since upgrading its system to NEC's AFIS21tm. The upgrade, valued at 10 million and implemented in August 1999, has expedited the ISP's ability to process latent prints -- prints found at the scene of a crime -- and improve matching hit rates by close to 30 percent. The ISP chose to implement AFIS21 because it is unsurpassed in accuracy and consistency. "Since we initially implemented NEC's AFIS in 1989, we've generated 3681 case investigative leads that we would not have been able to provide this exception technology," said Mike Murphy, Latent Print Group Supervisor, ISP. "With NEC's AFIS21, we can dramatically increase the number of positive identifications we produce."
