The National Equipment Register (NER) has released a guide to investigating theft of heavy equipment, available free to all law enforcement officers.

The pocket-sized guide offers tips on finding the correct identification number on a recovered piece of equipment used for construction, agriculture, or road maintenance, as well as off-road equipment. It also offers tips on finding theft and owner records and includes terminology specific to the equipment industry and NER operators, which can be useful in investigations.

The guide is meant to complement rather than duplicate existing guides that help with equipment identification.

Law enforcement officers may request a free copy of the guide by registering at www.nerusa.com/law.asp or by calling 866-FIND-PIN.
