Better than punching her in the mouth..After all, in most states spitting on a LEO is a felony.

Capt David-Ret LA County @ 9/11/2012 2:43 PM

I want to add that one of my deputies was spit in the eye, that got infected, which he lost the sight of..

Lee @ 9/11/2012 4:12 PM

^^Agreed (1st post). If you cannot use your taser without a suspension, then why carry it?

titan @ 9/11/2012 4:49 PM

Like a boss.

I was wondering if there is any data out there on the actual number of officer who DO get Hep C or something else. They had some unknowledgable doctor on CNN the other night who said that cops don't ever have to worry about getting diseases from things like this. If this dumb woman would look at evidence or even curriculum developed in conjunction with the CDC she would see that Hep C can stay active for 7 days outside the body. But I was wondering if there is data somewhere on it (I tried to find some but could not).

Anyone have any ideas?

Mark @ 9/11/2012 6:14 PM

I can't believe what I am reading here! Have any of you heard of proper escalation of force or is that not taught anymore in the academy. Ok, so she spit on him. What is she puked? Double tap in the noggin?

Dan @ 9/11/2012 6:35 PM

I have to agree with Mark. The TASER is a great tool for law enforcement when used appropriately!. It has become the "go to" less lethal of choice due to its effectiveness and time frame of recovery. However, it is our department's policy that, "....must show an overt act, or engage in, or attempt to engage in, an overt act which if completed, could cause a danger to the community or the officer...." to use a TASER. Spitting is assault, yes, but she is also a handcuffed subject. Maybe an arm bar take down to the ground to adjust the cuffs would have had a better long term effect. Even a palm strike to the chin to redirect the flow of spit would have been a better choice if you ask me.

Where are we? Are we in some third world country where punishment is handed out for religious purposes? What is going on with my fellow officers? Almost weekly, a video appears where the use of force is exaggerated and usually, illegal. I viewed this video numerous times and cannot fanthom how six (6) officers are observed and the officers using the taser is not physically threatened. A five foot female offended this unprofessional officer. Professionalism needs to be taught and retaught in police training schools. The "us against them" mentality needs to be eliminated. We serve the public and actions like the ones displayed simply creates a sour taste in one's mouth. The police are loosing the public relations war quickly. And sadly, loosing the respect of both citizens and fellow law enforcement officers.

Dylan @ 9/11/2012 10:31 PM

First off, all of you saying that the taser is "Less Lethal" are wrong. It is a "Non-Lethal" device. In saying that your tools are "less lethal", you are actually admitting that they are somewhat lethal, when their sole purpose if used correctly is not at all lethal.

Were his actions reasonable? We dont have all the details, so stop being the monday morning QB's that every LE that has ever had thier UOF reviewed by a jackass hates.

10 @ 9/11/2012 10:43 PM

Although it is dispicable to be spit on, let alone the possibility of catching a disease this use of force was without question an act of retaliation, which is absolutely unacceptable in our profession. Add the battery by bodily waste felony charge, and schedule a doctor app.

jason v @ 9/12/2012 3:40 AM

Too much ego and not enough brain! What an idiot, she was handcuffed and inside the station with cameras everywhere. Well to the two idiots ( the cop and the drunk) thanks for the footage

Cecilio Mendez @ 9/12/2012 5:00 AM

I totally agree with Dan. An arm-lock take-down... to adjust the cuffs or a palm strike to the chin... to redirect the flow of spit; would be much PC, effective and justifiable. And a great story to tell younger cops at field training!

Chris D @ 9/12/2012 5:54 AM

Disappointing to see a fellow officer react in this manner. Getting spit on sucks and tends to make a guy instantly angry, but if you cannot control your emotions inside the jail, with cameras running and plenty of witnesses on hand, your probably not going to control them in other situations.

Donutplz @ 9/12/2012 7:33 AM

Seriously? Arm bar take down to adjust the cuffs? palm strike to the chin to redirect spit? Seriously?

First off the cuffs were on and appeared to be working fine so, your idea would also be deemed excessive using your logic. What if she had hit her face on the concrete and broke something? Same thing with the "punch" to her face. That could also break something and would be much easier deemed assault since she is handcuffed.

IMO, the spitting is a felony and an assault.

Using the taser to prevent further assaults seems to be appropriate. It prevents ANY physical contact with the suspect and incapacitates them to the point you can get a mask on them without further spitting.

Could it have been handled differently? Sure. He could have just grabbed her and spun her around and them had a jailer put a mask on her from behind, But we dont know all the details about what led up to the video inside the jail.

The last time I saw a straight arm bar of a drunk on this site many were chastising the officer because she hit her face on the fender. A drunk is a drunk. They are unstable. Their actions are unpredictable because of their intoxication. Trying to do proper physical techniques on a drunk just doesnt work out sometimes.

Joe Dokes @ 9/12/2012 7:44 AM

Why does he have a weapon in the booking area anyway?

John @ 9/12/2012 9:01 AM

The Taser is one of the most valuable and effective tools that L.E. has, and to abuse it is to lose it.

Andy @ 9/12/2012 11:55 AM

First off she is lucky that's all she got. The real question though is why was she facing the officer. There in a booking situation and she should be facing the other way. It's an officer safety issue. She could have just as well kicked him in the groin.

TERRY ZECH @ 9/12/2012 4:42 PM

I am sure I seen the officer warn her two times before he tasered her. It's a felonious assault and if she has a serious disease the deparment loses an officer.

Bob@Az. @ 9/13/2012 1:10 PM

Damn, look at all the "coulda dones". I agree with Andy & Terry Z, back in the day she would have had her ass kicked for "Assualt on a Police Officer" and then did some cell time. Without audio we realy can't say what went on but it's obvious she was gonna go for it again. Good luck Officer. Blues, Stay safe !!

Duke @ 9/16/2012 1:22 AM

Less lethal is wrong, its Non-lethal? Someone needs to pay attention during their next Taser resert.

"..this use of force was without question an act of retaliation.."

He deployed the taser immediatly, its not like he gave it serious thought and said yup I'll show you.

Can't control emotions? Really? So if she threw feces at his face would you still expect him to not react?

Why does he have a weapon in the booking area anyway? So just because they are inside the jail means they can't hurt or kill an officer?

I don't agree with deploying the Taser 2 inches from her chest, especially with a cartridge in, touch stun would've been better at that range. Then again he REACTED, not retaliated. Drunk or not, shes lucky she doesn't have a broken jaw.

mitchell @ 12/14/2012 8:35 PM

drunk or not, shes lucky she wasnt thrown to the ground with a few boot marks or the side of her temple.

Peter Sokolowskyj @ 12/26/2012 5:45 AM

Thank God cop-cam was fitted in that cop shop and those monsters revieled who they really are. Wow suspended, what a fabulous result. Those monsters should be incarcerated. See what goes on behind closed doors, sometimes cops are out of control with abuse of power. Absolute monsters!

Peter Sokolowskyj @ 12/26/2012 5:46 AM

then fuck you freedom of speech you violate so sove ur shit up ur arse
