What was the PC to search the car?

PFPA-FTO @ 7/21/2011 3:37 PM

This guy should be FIRED!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kyle @ 7/21/2011 7:46 PM

I am a big defender of the cops, but this cop has one of the biggest Jerks with a Badge that I've seen. Approach the driver first. Fire that cop!!! <><

Joe @ 7/21/2011 8:59 PM

Please forward this tape to the FBI, civil rights violations are abundant. I am retired police officer and travel alot, but I will never cross the border into OHIO. I am a Texas CHL and we get treated with respect in our state. That officer is very scary to be out on the streets. The officer should not be allowed to have a gun after the terroristics threat to execute the driver

bpd3733 @ 7/21/2011 11:15 PM

Misguided aggression by the officer. A little retraining in taking control of the scene will help. He took too long to make contact with the driver. Much of his anger and frustration is his own fault. He made multiple mistakes and probably realized it after reviewing the video.

Frank @ 7/22/2011 12:49 AM

The officer was clearly an idiot high on himself and not following proper percedure because the driver should have been the first person addressed but because the passenger was black he was assumed to be the threat classic police bullshit it just happened to get caught on his camera

David Cook @ 7/22/2011 3:23 AM

I'm a retired officer out of California. This Canton Officer definitely needs a major attitude adjustment and memorize the Peace Officers code of ethics not to memtion the law which he has sworn to uphold. This guy scares me and should be taken off the streets before he ends up hurting or killing an innocent citizen. He's a pissed off individual ready to blow and this video should be used as a training tool for other officers as what not to do during a non confrontational contact with the public.

Joey @ 7/22/2011 3:38 AM

What an embarrassment to Police Officers everywhere.... 2 clowns who have NO idea what they are doing. These two buffoons (especially Einstein searching the back seat) should be thanking God the driver was a law abiding citizen and didn't decide to shoot him in the back of the head during his "search". WOW, I'm speechless about the other dolt. A real toughguy when he puts his badge on. I bet he's one of the biggest cowards you'd ever meet, without his uniform. If some treated him like that, he'd be the first one crying and complaining.... No wonder people hate Police. Thanks for making Police Officers' jobs everywhere, tougher, morons........

Stan Martin @ 7/22/2011 3:45 AM

Fire that out of control maniac officer!

Ben @ 7/22/2011 6:56 AM

It is sad that we (True Professional Police Officers) have to be embarassed by such unprofessional Officers as seen in this video. I would hope that all Ohio Officers as well as any Officer watching this video learns that this is not the way to treat citizens. If you believe this Officer was correct in his actions you either need re-training or a new profession.

Hank @ 7/22/2011 7:38 AM

This guy should be fired immediately and his partner 30 days. I cant believe how stupid and out of line these two are. It give cops across the nation a bad name how can you expect to have the community support with goofs acting like this.

Chris Bruno @ 7/22/2011 9:19 AM

Having recently retired after a 28 year law enforcement career I have to say I saw multiple failures on the part of the officers involved.

No one took control of the scene, no one approached the driver AND the biggest error I have seen since my rookie days, who searches a car with an occupant still inside???

It seems that the officers had already determined what they had and were so focused on "finding that golden nugget" that they placed their own lives and personal safety in jeopardy.

Sorry brothers, you definitely dropped the ball on this one

Josh @ 7/22/2011 10:50 AM

What's with this deal of addressing the males as "hoss" [horse]? Is that some Ohio slang? Or did the officer mistake the driver for Mr. Ed, the Talking Horse.

What was the PC for searching the back seat?

How bizarre to not deal with the driver and busy themselves searching the backseat and talking to the girl, other guy.

Is the prostitution the PC for a stop ... or is this a case of "DWB?"

Bill_Sims @ 7/22/2011 10:54 AM

Considering the way the officer was speaking to the other persons, I'm not a bit surprised that the driver was afraid to speak up!

And what's with the constant threats of violence against a compliant driver, even after the driver was handcuffed?

shawn @ 7/22/2011 10:59 AM

lemme see, cop in a bad neighborhood, late night, a known prostitute in a car w 2 males sitting stationary at a stop sign. ... He can pull any or all of those folks out when he feels its safe to do so, maybe he doesnt want all 3 out at one time. i know there is the "PC" response of this and then there is what a seasoned street cop will say it looks like. to me it looked like a trick and 2 johns about to make a deal. He has obviously dealt with her before. I would also assume he may check the immediate reach of the driver for weapons as it looks like he does.
if he worked for me, he would be fired ASAP, and maybe even indicted. a discrace to the Job.

Major retraining and probation for the copper... he is way outta line...

Fire him... depends on prior discipline issues

Blehr @ 7/22/2011 11:59 AM

I served 20+ years in the US Marine Corps and recently retired again from my second career as a 29 year Police Officer in California. I am embarrassed by and concerned with the overall behavior and presence of these two Canton officers. The primary officer, who I'm sure believes he is utilizing command presense tactics, is an over-bearing and abusive bully. I worked in a "plenty rough" town with tremendous gang and drug elements yet I never began a non-violent contact with the rude and abusive behavior shown by the primary officer. I don't have room here to even get into both Officer's total lack of "officer safety". I retired as a Sergeant; having worked many varied assignments. If I had supervised an officer who acted like this guy, he'd be getting some days off. What a supervisor's nightmare, department liability, future civil or possibly criminal lawsuit, and embarrassment to dedicated and PROFESSIONAL Police Officers all over this country. This is one reason that so often gives law enforcement a black eye. I'm glad there was no racial component to have to view. I worked Internal Affairs and I can tell you from my experience that 90% of complaints against Police Officers are "attitude" complaints. If the Officers had had a more professional attitude, there would be no complaint. This guy needs some help.

Shane @ 7/22/2011 12:13 PM

WOW!!!! And we wonder why people hate us? Thanks guys!!!! The two of you are lucky you survived as long as you did with those tactics and sharing of brain cells. You are both done now thank God!

Dale @ 7/22/2011 2:18 PM

Please fire this jerkoff. Cops like this do nothing but destroy the public's perception of those sworn to protect them. 20 years ago this guy was cowering in a locker room corner while the bigger boys snapped him with wet towels, and now everyone he contacts pays the price.

dan @ 7/22/2011 5:10 PM

Thanks for making cops look bad. You do not need to be a cop!

Jason @ 7/22/2011 7:27 PM

I am from Canton and can truly say that this is a huge PR & IO nightmare. The officer in the backseat is truly lucky as he was exposed throughout the search. He must of had a sense of security as he would of normally had the occupants exit the car and properly detained as he partner covered them and had oversight on the partner. He searched while the other partner was concerned about the passenger already out of the car instead of the driver & female passenger. Somehow the dispatcher wasn't clear about the CCW but did come across as a valid CCW holder. The officer does have an extreme aggression & power trip. This is depicted on his verbal & eventually a harassing comments from "blasting him in the mouth", "executioning him" and "pulling him over everytime and towing him". Being a CCW holder and instructor, regardless people are nervous about being pulled over and adding a CCW makes it a much more scenario to deal with. The police offciers do have to maintain a high state of readiness but with a passive aggressiveness in order to still maintain their authority. I am sure the deapartment is handling this and retraining and suspension is in the works. Lastly, the three occupants were not in the best area, at night and a known prostitute does not assist in the matter.

criswin @ 7/22/2011 8:28 PM

Every case is diferent the reaccion officer i think is normal becouse dont use force only arrest him .My opinion case ohio

Ann @ 7/22/2011 8:36 PM

Wow this cop is really stupid you leave the driver in the car and by the way he has a weapon on him and could have killed both officers but mister big shot so busy telling the woman and the passenger off, that he failed to follow the guidelines of checking the driver first, and the profanity he use towards the driver is un call for that is why some people do not have respect for cops, this cop do not need a license to carry a firearm he needs to be fired, because he is endangering lives instead of helping to keep the streets safe dumb cop

Ed Wright @ 7/23/2011 11:42 AM

No amount of training or retraining is going to fix this uniformed thug!
I have seen this before, His comments while patrolling gave a pretty good insight into his mindset.
Furthermore from reports I see out of Ohio, this indicative of the attitude from LE to CCW's. That may not be an accurate perception but that is whats being reported

Ed Wright @ 7/23/2011 11:45 AM

" What was the PC to search the car?"
ANd I quote from the officer ".. your just a stupid human being" does he need anymore PC?

Jamon @ 7/23/2011 9:35 PM

I am starting school this fall for a law enforcement degree and i can say that without any training at all i can see many mistakes this guy made. This guy is the reason many people have a negative view of the people that protect them. Very good example of what not to do though:) Thats why i watch these!

FrankD @ 7/25/2011 4:05 PM

The only stupid idiot is this police officer. He's a disgrace to law enforcement. He needs a big Time Out! What happen to courtesy and respect? Yes I know the public can drain you.

ex830.1 @ 7/25/2011 8:07 PM

Totally wacko, unprofessional, and some teeny little civil rights violations. That Officer is a disgrace. But the fact that the dude even has a CCW in the first place is beyond me.

scpdblue @ 7/26/2011 5:30 PM

This officer is a disgrace to the uniform...He is a hot head and does not represent me or my brothers and sister in uniform.. It is clear from the video this officers whole focus was on the black guy, when the whole time he had a armed person behind the wheel. If the CWP holder was not a honest citizen we might had had two officers killed do to the lack of supervision of the driver....Lead officer(driver) makes contact with the driver of the vehicle, second officer watches passenger in rear. This is basic police traffic stop 101. This is a case of I am superman. He needs to be fired and his commission pulled in that state so that he can not go to a small department. He has a hair trigger attitude and does not need to be a police officer.

felando @ 7/28/2011 11:05 PM

I Know this is not how Ohio trains its officers to act and perform! He talks about officer safety! I don't think sticking your head in a car before checking out the driver is safe at all. Don't come work in Detroit with that mindset. I cant believe they even did a traffic stop like that! And he talks about officers getting killed. I hope they retrain this guy and teach him how to be respectful even under pressure! I would be surprised if he is not reprimanded for those deadly force comments. Very unprofessional.

Kurt @ 7/29/2011 4:12 PM

Where in the heck did those two get their training?? Cracker-Jack Box. The DoJ should be jumping all over this. That poor soul that was veberally abused by this officer should sue the heck out of that department.

Joshua @ 7/30/2011 11:23 PM

Sounds like the cop needs his ass beat, letting the badge get to his head!

Green @ 8/3/2011 9:10 AM

What the heck is wrong with that officer(s)? It is no wonder why everyday citizens’ have grown tried of the repeat crap given to them from police. This individual who calls himself a police officer is off the damn scale as it relates to integrity, respect, and accountability. As a current profession law enforcement officer, I know what it means to see this type of misconduct from law enforcement on all scales.

To see it captured and recorded scares the heck out of me for, what would have happened had the dash cam not been in the police cruise? Simply put, that Canton, Ohio Police officer(s) would have beaten that motorist. What’s even more disturbing is that the police officer was only focusing in on the black male in the rear seat ONLY! Five to six minutes into this stop he tells the black male to leave the scene despite not knowing the real name of the male.

FBI has a wonderful civil rights division. I hope that the motorist and his legal team have filed the needed action with them. This places a black eye on law enforcement every where. The illegal acts caused by the Canton Officer needs to be dealt with swiftly. It’s just as shameful that the partner did nothing to stop his “Brother’s” actions as well. I call it the snowball effect. Round down hill and watch it get bigger and out of control.

Andrew @ 8/7/2011 7:38 AM

this cop should be fired, he's what makes the rest of us look bad. i don't give a shit what the reason is, since when do you search a vehicle with someone still in it. thank god the driver wasn't a real bad guy because he def coulda killed that officer while he was searching the vehicle. that cop is a idiot

TacGuy @ 8/17/2011 11:48 AM

The officer that dealt with the driver is out of control. The officers should have approached the driver and ID'd him much earlier, as he had control of the vehicle. We can not see where the driver's hands were, but when he does inform the officer about his permit, the officer should have started with keep your hands in plain view on the steering wheel, and where is the gun on your body. This kind of thing gives us all a bad rap in the public's eyes.

Art Pillen @ 8/20/2011 7:54 AM

Yep, he's a bone-head jerk. I'm a retired Police Officer. He's one of the "10%ers" that give the rest of us a bad name. The driver isn't necessarily the first you approach, but during the initial encounter (I quit watching once he started yelling at the guy) he paid almost no attention to the driver (a possible threat). This clown should never have gotten through probation!

Michael Dougherty @ 8/26/2011 1:45 PM

38 years on the job and this has to be the worst display of unprofessional police antics that I have ever seen. This officer should be fired and criminal charges filed on him immediately! Absolutely unbelievable.

buco123 @ 11/9/2011 9:45 AM

WOW That is all I can say, those cops just fed more fuel to the anti-cop fire. The one cop is not fit to be in public as an officer or as a civilian, lock his ass up!

D green @ 12/8/2011 11:02 AM

Its sad but its lack of correct training on the officer such as he works for the public and a document that has been abused and slowly pushed aside ah its called the U.S. Constitution. There are several violations on the officers. Lets look at the Bill of Rights also, whats really bad there is an officer like this in every P.D.

Matt W. @ 1/12/2012 1:15 PM

I am in shock at the officers behavior and reaction as well as his ridiculous tirade; One officer should have stood behind the vehicle as the other officer went to the drivers side window and asked the two obvious questions; 'do you know why we are detaining do you?' and 'do you have your licence, registration and proof of insurance?' Third question; 'do you have any weapons or drugs in the vehicle.' I stand on the side of law enforcement but yes, sorry officers, cops like this scare the heck out of regular law abiding folks...he actually threatened the driver with serious physical harm and even death! Is THAT not a crime in itself? This officer needs some time off of street duty!

Alvin @ 1/12/2012 6:13 PM

Alvin @ 1/12/2012 6:16 PM

Laura @ 1/13/2012 5:05 AM

I've seen some officers do some crazy things in my years as a police officer but this is in the top 10 of the worst! Looking onto the story the officer has been fired and the charges against the man arrested were thrown out of court. They are very lucky this man was not a threat or we might have been attending 2 more funerals for fellow brothers.

Steve E @ 1/28/2012 10:08 PM

His partner is the beta punk, and he is the alpha punk , so the partner is a gutless follower and should also be canned.

I thought you look out for your partner and don't allow him or her to go over board and get himself into hot water, but no he is a coward , they are both equity guilty, this stuff doesn't happen in a vacume.

He has done this before and got reprimanded for turning off the car cam and mic !!!

Test him for illegal steroids, I bet we have a ragging bull on the needle

Tactical @ 2/17/2012 11:51 AM

Another Barney Bad Ass that Doesn't comprehend his Duties. At least he got his poses in for the DBC. What you got on ya? Got a Shooter on Ya? Mr. Hollier Than Thou... i know alot of Pricks like this and I feel Fine Telling them. Driver clearly states, I've got a Carry!!! Officer says If you Give me An answer other than the truth you're coming out of there. HELLO DOUChE clean the ROIDS out of your ears! This IDIOT officer IS clearly more Interested in what's coming out of his mouth.

MaDmAx @ 3/18/2012 6:15 PM

Cops are fucking DICKS .blank

rick hayes @ 4/9/2012 5:40 PM

the canton ohio cop is out of control, showing his jerk style attitude at a driver . he needs more training and attitude management control---fire the [email protected]

Jim @ 4/9/2012 5:40 PM

This guy has the sack to ask for his job back? Talk about a stupid human being! I've got a job for you, it involves asking "you want fries with that?"

Bob T.retired NYS LEO @ 4/9/2012 9:01 PM

AFTER all my years as a cop in both NY and FL, I hate to critique my own, but the officer fails to make immediate contact with the driver. IF he had this entire scenario would have been avoided. I carry a concealed weapon and if I get stopped you are always asked if you have weapons in the vehicle. Plus this is no way to treat a citizen.

Stuart @ 4/9/2012 9:12 PM

I am a "Cop's Cop" and live for the Brotherhood & Blue Line but this A$$ Hole is a disgrace the the badge.

Greg @ 4/10/2012 3:52 AM

Who will come to the aid of police? It's sure not the'll be the concealed carry people. They'll stop and help one of us, they're the ones who see the police as a kindred spirit (fellow "sheepdogs" against the wolves). This embarrassment sure did nothing to help Ohio police in future needs...people remember attitude.

A story: When I was 17 I was driving down a country road, a MD state trooper was parked...I asked him if he needed help. He'd run out of gas...I had a jerry can and gave him 5 gallons to get him back to the barracks. He gave me an inspection ticket for a burned out rear tag bulb (it wasn't burned out, the tag holder spring was week and the tag went back a bit). I'll always remember this trooper and his attitude.

Pat Harner @ 4/10/2012 5:37 AM

I am a deputy sheriff in Virginia and this guy would be fired without question if he worked for us. His behavior is the worst I have ever witnessed. This is why people hate the police. He is a timebomb waiting to explode.

Juan 10-13 @ 4/10/2012 5:43 AM

Embarassing, shameful and disgusting! I hope and pray Ohio's finest boots this blemish out. I apologize to the owner of the vehicle that was wrongfully arrested. We are NOT like this jack ass. We as community care-takers are sworn to respect and protect OUR citizens not humiliate and abuse them!!!!!!

David @ 4/10/2012 6:31 AM

I have been in law enforcement for nearly 24 years and the Canton Police Officer in this video has no business wearing a badge. What a disgrace. The CCW Permit hold as evidenced in the video didn't do anything wrong except be in Canton Ohio apparently. The officer needs to stay off the steroids and should be fired.

oldcol @ 4/10/2012 8:36 AM

I have been in the business for over 42 years, and a Chief for over 22 years. After viewing this tape, I cannot express how much I support the decision to fire this officer! I would not be surprised to learn that this was one of a series of incidents in this officer's "jacket". His demeanor and size suggests that steriods might also be in the picture.

Sad commentary for all who try to do the job the right way.

FireCop @ 4/10/2012 9:50 AM

Normally stick up for cops, but the frickin clown thats "in charge" of that car stop has some serious issues. I am all in favor of officer safety as well. Hey, hot head: control the situation, pat down all the folks your dealing with and ASK them first off if they have any weapons on them. Fire his worthless ass. He will only be a liability to the department. Driver.....excercise your rights & remain silent.

johnnymoi @ 4/10/2012 11:14 AM

Lets hope this knucklehead doesn't get reinstated.

johnnymoi @ 4/10/2012 11:14 AM

Lets hope this knucklehead doesn't get reinstated.

Paul Sedlacek @ 4/10/2012 3:23 PM

The firing should be upheld, I have been an Officer for 17 years and I feel the behavior of the Officer was unprofessional and out of line. The job is difficult as it is, all he does is embarass the profession. A guy with his attitude should not have a badge in his wallet or on his chest.

Rev. Lowrey @ 4/10/2012 3:31 PM

Finally, some appropriate comments on one of these bad cop stories.
If the police would go back to being "peace officers" maybe they wouldn't have to be so afraid of and antagonistic toward the law abiding public. I'm glad to see so many of you were embarrassed by this not so untypical officer. Perhaps you should realize that this is the image much of the public now has of you all.

Barry @ 4/10/2012 4:22 PM

OH MY GOD... Never in 30 years on the job have I seen such an ass. Talk about someone that needs to be fired as soon as possible because of his attitude, but his officer safety sucked the big one as well. This guy is a train wreck waiting to happen. A sad example of a professional.

Scott @ 4/11/2012 7:39 AM

Concealed carry isn't an issue for the majority of law abiding citizens in the country. This video portrays a wide range of problems with the officers and the implementation of the concealed carry law. Something that "professional" police officers need to avoid is making judgements on actions and attitudes of other officers based on a video. I DO NOT feel these officers acted safely or professionally. That they may lose their jobs over this is the consequence of acting outside of policy and in violation of law. This is an excellent video for training.

Rudy @ 4/12/2012 2:03 PM

All these comments nail it. This officer needs to be taken off the force. He has no business being on the street wearing that badge. We have no room for that.

A.T. @ 4/13/2012 7:44 PM

The scary thing is that there are more of these officers out there with similar anger management problems. It seems he is burnt out on the job. So get him off the job. Officers like these are an embarrassment to all of us. And makes our jobs so much harder because of him. The citizens will trust us less.

Carlo @ 4/14/2012 6:41 AM

Both Officers need some days off, counseling and apologize to Mr. Citizen. My opinion only......

JR @ 6/25/2012 11:02 AM

Makes a great training video for "Good Cops"
What is wrong with this officer anyhow?

goodguy @ 7/1/2012 12:59 PM

That dumb ass hill billy cop is the reason that we all need to carry and i think we should all stand up for ourselvs now..... removeing cops like him from our streets ...i hope he sits in prison for his threts ......
that was wrong.....

Reaper @ 8/7/2012 1:03 AM

the cop should be put in jail...pathedic ingrate..and they wonder why we dont trust in them

KenBay @ 8/11/2012 8:56 PM

Wow what crawled up this guy's panties. He should of "executed" the guy for lawfully carrying a pistol...what? This is horrendous behavior. First, was the guy trying to pick up a prostitute? Maybe. Try proving that in court though. Not gonna happen unless he admitted it--which he obviously wasn't. Second, the driver should probably have at least tried to comply with the law of identifying himself as a cc holder. Although I do agree that it would be dangerous in this situation as the officer already prejudged the driver as guilty of committing a crime. The officer is also extremely nervous and unreasonably on edge. Why would a criminal who wanted to use his firearm to murder an officer identify himself as a cc holder with a firearm? So , I definitely agree with the court and everyone else on earth who's not a gestapo nazi on this one. This officer needed to be removed from his job. Very unprofessional and reactionary behavior.

AlVal @ 8/25/2014 6:53 PM

Driver tried 3 times to notify the dumbass jerk thug Cop that he was carrying, but the cop told he tonshut up. Allegedly the cop hss PTSD was investigated for this and other misconduct and fired. He is now suing for his job back.
