Six people of DG Auto are accused of buying the stolen parts and "de-canning" them to extract the powdered metals—rhodium, platinum, and palladium—and sell them to a metal refinery. They allegedly made about $545 million from the process, the Justice Department said.

WA Chief Blames Rise in Catalytic Converter Theft on Law That Prohibits Chasing Thieves
In Sunday’s incident, Chief Stacy Denham said someone called police saying a man had been looking underneath cars. When officers arrived and told the man they wanted to speak with him, he got in a car, drove over a section of grass and a curb, and sped away, Denham said.
