Knoxville SRO Wounded in School Shooting Recovering After Surgery

The Knoxville School Resource Officer who was wounded engaging an armed student at Austin-East High School Monday is recovering in a local hospital after surgery. The suspect was killed in the same gunfight.

The shootings occurred at about 3:15 p.m. Monday after police responded to a call that an armed student was holed up in a school bathroom, KnoxNews reports.

When officers entered the bathroom, the student fired at them, striking Officer Adam Wilson, and was hit and killed by return fire from police, said David Rausch, director of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

Wilson, a 20-year veteran of the Knoxville PD, underwent surgery Monday night. At the time, Police Chief Eve Thomas said he was in serious condition. 

WBIR reports Officer Wilson was shot in the leg. He is expected to recover.

The deceased suspect has not been identified.
