KY Officer Shot When Car Accelerates Towards Cops

Police have not released details of who fired the shot that struck the officer. Following the shooting, the officer was reported to be in stable condition at an area hospital.

A Lexington, KY, police officer was shot Wednesday night as officers fired on a vehicle that accelerated towards them. Police say the officer’s gunshot wound is not life threatening.

According to the Lexington Police Department, around 11 p.m. officers located a vehicle associated with a robbery and during the course of the investigation the driver accelerated the vehicle towards the officers.

The officers fired, striking the driver. That driver was transported to an area hospital and is reported to be in stable but critical condition.

Police have not released details of who fired the shot that struck the officer. Following the shooting, the officer was reported to be in stable condition at an area hospital.

The incident is being investigated by the Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team and the police department's Public Integrity Unit will conduct an internal review of the incident. As per policy, the officers involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative assignment pending the outcome of the investigation.

The officers’ body-worn cameras were activated during the shooting, police say.
