The man, who has not been identified, fatally shot Officer Robert "Bobby" Hornsby, 32, with an AK-47 rifle, according to the agency.

Killeen PD officers responded to a 911 call at 11:40 p.m. that a resident had threatened several people in the pool area of the Grandon Manor Apartments with a gun.

Initial responding units located a man inside an apartment holding a rifle in a threatening manner. The agency called out its Tactical Response Unit, which arrived and attempted to contact the man, who raised his hands.

After the man fired one shot, officers attempted to take him into custody. He backed into the apartment, armed himself with the AK-47, and began shooting at officers. Officer Hornsby was fatally shot and Officer Juan Obregon Jr., 33, was wounded in the leg. Other officers returned fire, killing the man.

Officer Hornsby was a four-year agency veteran. He leaves behind a wife, 4-year-old daughter, and 1-year-old son.
