The deputy was shot about 5 a.m., but there is no word what led to the incident. Police say the injured Union County, N.C., sheriff's deputy was taken to Carolinas Medical Center, and that his injuries are not life-threatening. Police radio reports indicate the deputy was shot in the shoulder.

Santa Ana Police Launch Gang Crackdown

In response to an escalation of violence, including three shootings in a 24-hour period last month and an increase in arrests of gang members with guns, Santa Ana, Calif., police have launched a three-day operation targeting gang members and encouraging residents to report crime in a 2-square-mile area southwest of the Civic Center.

N.C. Officers Pursue Suspect onto Golf Course, Chase Lasts Hours

After a teen allegedly rammed a patrol car Wednesday, he led officers on a two-hour chase across a southern Wake County, N.C.,  golf course that involved four law enforcement agencies, a bloodhound named Ruby, a helicopter and, finally, a squadron of golf carts.
