The panel said California officials had failed to comply with their order to produce a plan to pare the number of state prisoners by 40,000 within two years. The judges agreed to postpone a decision on a request by inmates' lawyers to hold Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in contempt of court for defying the earlier order, issued Aug. 4.

A U.S. district judge sentenced the Colombian drug kingpin and former FBI top ten fugitive Diego Montoya Sanchez to a 45-year prison term. Montoya Sanchez, whose alias was "Don Diego," had entered a guilty plea to murder and cocaine trafficking.

Memphis PD Fires Two Officers Over Accidental Shooting

Melissa Haley, 35, and Dexter Craig, 28, were terminated for their involvement in an April training accident that led to the shooting of a recruit in the wrist, a Memphis television station is reporting.

The Obama administration has ended the policy of federal enforcement of medical marijuana patients and dispensers in states where use of the drug is permitted for certain illnesses, Attorney General Eric Holder has announced.

'Last Samurai' Arrested After Attacking Officer

A suicidal Pennsylvania man who threatened to torch his apartment attacked a SWAT officer with a Samurai sword, and then was taken into custody when that officer used his Taser to subdue him, the Daily Times reports.

Oakland Swears In New Chief Batts

Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums will swear in the city's new police chief at the City Council meeting today, SFGate.com reports. Anthony Batts, 49, formerly the police chief in Long Beach, replaces Wayne Tucker, who retired in February.

A man who carjacked a Chevrolet Tahoe in a Visalia, Calif., parking lot using a sawed-off shotgun led police on a high-speed pursuit, until OnStar operators disabled the vehicle using a new feature added in 2009, the Los Angeles Times reports.
