What's Really Going On With Crime Rates

By Dean Scoville

For all its censuring of personnel for on-duty trysts and off-duty DUIs, the profession pays curiously little attention to an ongoing transgression perpetrated within it: stat fudging. Misreporting statistics about crime is not a new phenomenon.

Beware the Lone Wolf

Lone wolves operate on the fringes of extremist movements, with such loose associations being encouraged by terrorist organizations such as al-Qaeda and Hezbollah, and that makes them harder to detect.

Will On-Body Kill In-Car Video?

Law enforcement agencies have been using in-car video cameras for a little more than two decades. The devices have defended officers against nuisance claims of abusive or even brutal behavior. But now some agencies are beginning to ask if in-car video systems have been made obsolete by officer-worn systems.

The Detroit Blues

A force of 2,419 Detroit Police officers now provides law enforcement services to the shrinking city of just over 706,000 residents. Between 1990 and 2011, the city lost a third of its residents. Since 2003, the agency has lost a third of its officers.

You Have the Right to Record

The Citizens Empowerment Act is an attempt to thwart criminal investigations by launching them into the court of YouTube. It would require federal officers to serve written notice to people under investigation that they are entitled to record interviews with the officers.

Make Your Own Luck

I know a lot of crime fighters who begin to wax philosophical after their fifth beer and one of the common axioms I hear is: "I would rather be lucky than good."

Drawing First Blood

Reporters rarely get all the facts right because the facts are hazy by the time their first stories are posted on the Web, broadcast, or inked onto paper. That haziness doesn't clear until the official investigation is complete. By then the reporters have created a "truth" that persists in the public consciousness.

Police Product Test: TruGlo Tru-See Targets

I like these new TruGlo Tru-See targets. They take some of the guesswork and haphazard engineering out of the precision shooting process.

Police Product Test: Fechheimer-Vertx ColdBlack Polo and Phantom LT Pants

Vertx's mission is to produce "functionally advanced clothing for the operational athlete." For this review Vertx sent me a few pairs of Phantom LT pants and one ColdBlack polo shirt.

Heckler & Koch HK45 Compact Tactical

You can tell very quickly when you open the box that the HK45CT is more than just an update of the combat proven HK USP Compact. Ergonomically, this is a 21st-century pistol all the way, but it offers the reliability and toughness of a classic HK.

Shots Fired: Burton, Michigan 07/01/2009

At the sound of Barksdale's commands, Kalahar spun the shotgun toward him and leveled it. As the man flinched, Barksdale's finger squeezed the trigger of his gun—repeatedly.

Quicker Response to Active Shooters

Despite its traditional mission, I always thought our motor unit could assume a more tactical posture and play less of a support role, especially when responding to school shootings. Since motors are such a specialized unit, it is easier to pull them off of their primary missions and redirect them whenever necessary.

The Chief Trainer

You are a chief or sheriff. Get real and train with your officers. You should be one of the first enrolled in your defensive tactics and subject control training classes. Your attendance and participation will speak to all, and what it will say is this stuff is real and it's important.

Trident Case-Arkon Device Mount

Because the Kraken AMS is designed to be secured in a mount, Ontario, Calif.-based Trident Case has established a partnership with Arcadia, Calif.-based mount manufacturer Arkon to create a solution for law enforcement vehicles.

Video and You

If you aren't speaking and behaving at all times in public the way you want to appear when you're uploaded on YouTube, you could have some unpleasant surprises in store.
