Body Armor: Protecting Those Who Serve

To date, only 60% of agencies require officers to don body armor on duty. In an effort to increase those numbers and ultimately save lives, the Bulletproof Vest Partnership, which reimburses up to 50% of a vest's purchase price, now requires agencies receiving funds to have a written mandatory wear policy for uniformed patrol officers.

Realistic Optimism

Real optimism isn't just expecting good things to happen; it is how you internally explain to yourself the bad things that happen and what you do about them. Everyone is going to suffer bad events.

Military Surplus Gear: Abuse It and Lose It

Last month the Defense Department cut off a very valuable resource for many of the nation's 17,000 law enforcement agencies. The Pentagon's 1033 program provides cash-strapped police and sheriff's departments with free military surplus.

Shots Fired: Glendora, California 05/15/2011

The suspect spun counterclockwise to face Cpl. Chris Stabio. His face was contorted into a grimace and his lips seemed to mouth an unheard profanity. He raised his right arm toward Stabio. In his hand was a dark object. That the object was a firearm didn't become apparent until Stabio was about almost six feet inside the front door and it started spitting fire at him.
