Global Terror, Local Targets

By David Griffith

The following is a quick look at where and how some of the leading experts on terrorism believe our enemies may strike. It's in no particular order because each scenario is a nightmare, and how do you rate a nightmare?

In-Car Computers: Upgrade or Replace?

Much of this decision depends on what make and model of computer you have, what is broken, and/or what you need the computer to do that it isn't able to do now. Sometimes you can do a transplant, and in other situations the best thing is to let it go and give it a decent burial.

Active Shooter Response Gear

As patrol responds to more and more calls formerly reserved for SWAT teams, tools that equip these officers to handle violent incidents are increasingly important.

Identifying and Documenting Gang Members

Patrol officers are an essential source of gang information and usually make up the front line defense against gangs. Through field contacts and observations, they can supply confirmation of an individual's gang membership.

NRA Honors LE Courage and Service

Since 1993, the National Rifle Association has presented the NRA Law Enforcement Officer of the Year Award.

National Rifle Association and Law Enforcement: Celebrating 50 Years of Teamwork

From its founding, one of the NRA's most important missions has been to improve the firearms prowess of Americans who may be called to serve their country in the armed forces. And since 1960, the organization has also helped train another kind of warrior: the law enforcement officer.

Bearing Bad News

Make the notification as soon as possible following the incident. Making a personal notification is always a race against time, and it's far better that they hear it from you, in person, rather than finding out on the news or through the grapevine that their loved one has died.

Columns

Stings, Stabs, and Bites

Nothing focuses the mind during a search warrant like discovering a diamondback rattlesnake in a dresser drawer.

Death by Political Correctness

A lot has changed since 9/11. But one thing remains the same: There are a lot of bad people out there who want to make us bleed. The United States is still a very soft and juicy target.

Smith & Wesson Bodyguard 380 Pistol

As its name indicates, the Smith & Wesson Bodyguard 380 was designed from the ground up for use by police officers and licensed civilians who needed a small, lightweight, concealable, and easy to use pistol. I believe it would be safe to say that S&W's engineers have delivered just that.

Beware the Restrained Subject

Over the years, I've heard multiple accounts of handcuffed subjects who later escaped or attempted to escape. One particular incident involved a young kid who fled on foot. His ability to outrun two officers with his hands behind his back demonstrated just how focused a person can be if he wants to escape.

After a near-shootout at a gas station and vehicle pursuit, the suspect stormed into a grocery store and held a hostage at gunpoint.

Shots Fired: Scottsdale, Arizona 04/23/2006

This month, you're receiving an enhanced "Shots Fired" from POLICE Magazine. In addition to the usual gripping storytelling, we've also embedded links to the radio dispatch traffic, overhead thermal-image view from the helicopter and photos from the crime scene. Enjoy.

Tennessee Officer IDs Murder Suspect Between Calls

While he was on a plainclothes detail, he recognized a woman he'd seen in a video still, leading investigators to the murderer of an elderly man. For his investigative skills, Paidousis has been named the September 2010 Officer of the Month by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.

Developing Training Acronyms

One of the best ways to train law enforcement officers in a classroom setting is to chunk up material into quickly memorized bites. You can also maximize the effectiveness of training by using a variety of memory aids.

Digital Ally's LaserAlly LIDAR system can acquire targets in one-third of a second at more than a mile.

Light Speed

The lightweight LaserAlly system has a maximum range of about 1,500 feet when shot through glass and about 6,000 feet when not shooting through a window or windshield.

Electronic Privacy on the Job

Increasingly, law enforcement agencies issue electronic communication and information equipment to employees for their use in performing official duties. Access to and use and monitoring of the information stored or transmitted by means of such devices may be subject to a variety of employer policies, state and federal statutes, constitutional provisions, and case law.
