What Happens to the Children of Fallen Officers

By Dean Scoville

"I love my father, but one thing I know he would want me to learn from his experiences is that this kind of dedication can cost you. There's always a cost, and in his case, it cost him his life, but also time with his family."

-Jim Chadwell Jr.

TREXPO East 2009: Report from the Aisles

A tactical law enforcement trade show like TREXPO East tends to attract some fairly innovative tools. Walking the aisles, you could see the latest tactical vehicles, weapons, communications, and apparel. Here's a quick look at some of the things that caught our attention.

5.11 Tactical

Wet Weather Wear

While giving waterproof jackets a "test wearing," I have had input from several members of my local department and from guys I shoot with. We have found that 5.11 Tactical, BlackHawk, Blauer, Elbeco, Fechheimer, Propper, The Force, Tru Spec by Atlanco, Under Armour, and Woolrich's Elite Tactical Series serve well in a wide range of conditions.

Beyond Facial Recognition

Currently, biometric systems are being used every day by officers in two distinct missions: security and identification. And they can be very useful.

Easy Readers

Can you accurately see and write down one license plate number per second while driving at up to 100 miles per hour, even with darkness or bright sun limiting your sight? Fortunately, there are automated systems that can do this for you.

Blood from a Turnip

Nothing can captivate a jury with such magnetic power as the live testimony of another human being, or even the reading of a confession in the courtroom. While it is one of the most difficult things to master, knowing and practicing the skills and techniques of good interviewing results in better case information and more convictions in the courtroom.

Saving Green by Going Green

"We are all looking to reduce future costs," says Chief Robert Stewart of the Cotati (Calif.) Police Department, whose department sought to save money by reducing its energy use with a new police facility. While green features added $700,000 to the project's final tab, Stewart expects a rapid return on the investment in reduced energy costs.

From Survivor to Warrior

"There's nobody here to fight for my dad. I feel like if I stop fighting, who else has he got? I'm it."

Honoring the Fallen

The thought of not being there for my boy and leaving others to exert some control in fashioning his principles, values, and priorities began to weigh heavily on my mind. Would others step up to assist him in my absence? How would he ultimately deal with my absence?

Bad Habits

Every time someone tries to kick our butts and we have him fully subdued and cuffed and searched we should look deeply into his eyes and say, "Thanks, I needed that!"

Reviews

Daniel Defense M4 Carbine

Having been impressed with the finish, fit, and quality of Daniel Defense quad rails in the past, I was intrigued by the company's new M4-style carbine. I had a hard time parting with it after I was finished putting it through its paces.

Inspector Gadget

Using Merlin, investigators can search for subjects by phone numbers, addresses, and other information.

University Event Riots

A department can prepare for a large student gathering by reviewing what has occurred in the past and considering the resources it has available. Such precautions are critical because any student gathering can digress into a riot.

A good shooting stance should be flexible enough that it can be used under combat conditions from behind cover.

Shooting Outside of the Box

He recommended "a wide, sturdy stance" when shooting. His method of finding the proper stance was to build a little wooden box for the shooter to stand in. I've forgotten the dimensions of the box because...well...because it was a ridiculous idea.

Public School Searches

Public school officials are entitled to search the student if there are reasonable grounds for suspecting the student of violating the law or any school rule. But once law enforcement officers become involved, higher justification standards will apply.

Dep. Dave Lawler received the Medal of Honor from the Linn County (Ore.) Sheriff's Office for his action in saving a hostage.

Shots Fired: Brownsville, Oregon 02•16•2008

Sgt. Lawler popped up over the hood of the Pontiac just as Thompson's upper torso rose off the pavement, his gun again swinging in Lawler's direction.
