Urban Shield: Planning and Logistics
I refer to Urban Shield as a "gruelathon," and this year proved even tougher than 2009. Although there are a number of outstanding SWAT competitions throughout America, I can think of none more realistic, encompassing, massive and demanding than Urban Shield.

Urban Shield: Training for the Unthinkable
Training for the "unthinkable" is what Urban Shield is all about because the "unthinkable" can, and does, happen. And like lightning in a thunderstorm, you never know where or when the next strike will occur.

Urban Shield Tests Police Responders
Twenty nine tactical teams, including three international, participated in Urban Shield 2010, the nation's largest first-responder training hosted by the Alameda County (Calif.) Sheriff's Office. Organizers roll out scenario-based exercises at a variety of venues that teams must respond to during a 48-hour period. With each exercise, the teams must manage and respond to an ongoing critical incident. The exercises "provide opportunities to enhance response efforts and identify training needs in a simulated environment," according to organizers. Photos courtesy of Alameda County Sheriff's Office.

TASER Showcases Shockwave Area Denial System at Urban Shield
The Shockwave ADS looks a lot like a claymore mine from a science fiction movie, but it’s really just an array of TASER cartridges. So it’s non-lethal. But that doesn’t mean it won’t ruin your day if you happen to be someplace you shouldn’t or participating in say…a prison riot.
