Orange County (Calif.) Sheriff Department's Deputy Sgt. Yvonne Shull spent 13 years collecting a patch from each of the nation's more than 3,200 sheriffs' agencies. Alaska is the only state not represented, because there are no sheriffs' agencies there. A California police officer field-tests 5.11 Tactical's Patrol Duty Uniform (PDU) by crawling on grass, rolling in dirt and pouring a bucket of mud on his chest. The PDU is Teflon-treated to resist stains and repel water.

So what did I find from the major vendors for base layers? There are base layers from cotton, various polyester/Lycra blends, wool blends, and layers for cold or hot weather. The choices seem to be endless.

Gone are the days when a woman police officer was acting as a social worker with a badge, and they now fill as many roles as male police officers do. Many companies are adjusting what they manufacture and sell to specifically meet the needs of women police officers. This is after years of providing only unisex products and using a one size fits most business model.

Traditional BDUs (Battle Dress Uniforms) aren't nearly as common as they used to be. But the idea of wearing an alternative uniform that's combat ready-originally borrowed from the military-is more popular than ever, as evidenced by the assortment of new BDUs, tacpants, and jumpsuits available for law enforcement.
