FBI Investigating Calif. Airsoft Shooting

The FBI is launching its own investigation into the shooting last week of Andy Lopez, the 13-year-old Santa Rosa boy killed by a Sonoma County sheriff's deputy who mistook the airsoft AK-47 replica Lopez was holding for an assault rifle.

Sheriff's officials had previously declined to release the deputy's name, citing threats to his safety. Assistant Sheriff Lorenzo DueƱas said the office was still dealing with those threats and would, if necessary, take measures to protect Gelhaus.

Sonoma County, Calif., sheriff's deputies shot and killed a 13-year-old boy who was carrying an Airsoft replica of an AK-47 Tuesday afternoon during an encounter in a southwest Santa Rosa neighborhood.

The incident occurred while an officer was clearing a round from a .40-caliber handgun. The gun went off, sending the round into a concrete table. The bullet broke apart, sending fragments into a second officer's leg, hand, and face.
