Officer Who Responded to Joplin Tornado Dies from Lightning Injuries

Officer Jefferson "Jeff" Taylor, who was struck by lightning on Monday, May 23, while on tornado disaster response duty in Joplin, passed away at a hospital here on Friday. He was 31 years old. He worked for Riverside, a suburb on the north side of Kansas City.

Riverside (Mo.) Police Officer Jeff Taylor has been induced into a medical coma in the intensive care unit of a Springfield, Mo., hospital, as he struggles to recover from being struck by lightning.

Lightning Strikes Missouri Officer In Tornado Response

Lightning struck the area near where Officer Jeff Taylor, 31, was riding an ATV, after transporting a fire commander back to a command post. Officer Taylor was transported to a Springfield hospital and treated for burns and other injuries.
