Gang members on the street and inside prisons acquire edged weapons to use in close-quarter attacks on rival gang members or law enforcement officers. Street gang members typically will use fixed-blade knives, daggers, folding knives, butterfly knives or other utility tools, while inmates fashion their own jail-made shanks and other weapons from boot reinforcements, bed wiring, and other materials. Gang Unit Confiscates Weapons
After noticing an upswing in gang activity in 2006, the Livermore (Calif.) Police Department's gang unit began more targeted efforts to keep the city's illegal gang activities under control. In this clip produced by the Contra Costa Times, officers confiscate a baseball bat painted with "XIII" for 13, which refers to the letter 'M' (13th in the alphabet) to pledge allegience to the Mexican Mafia.
