Long Guns: 2011

January 13, 2011

Just 10 years ago when law enforcement agencies went out to purchase long guns, they rarely looked at anything other than shotguns. Today, the AR and other military-style rifles dominate the market.

The Best Way to Zero a Rifle

December 8, 2010
Sighting in on a target at 25 yards is much easier than attempting to sight in at a greater distance. Once sighted in at 25 yards, it will be easy to find your shots at 100 yards or greater and make the correct adjustments.

State Agencies Select Smith & Wesson M&P Rifles

November 29, 2010
Smith & Wesson has announced that the Nevada Department of Public Safety (DPS) has chosen to equip its officers with 500 M&P15X tactical rifles. Nevada DPS joins a number of law enforcement agencies that have converted to Smith & Wesson tactical rifles, including the Nebraska State Patrol, which also recently selected duty rifles the M&P Series.

SIG Sauer To Offer 556 Carbine In 7.62x39

November 24, 2010
The 7.62x39 was not developed for sniper work. Longer cartridges such as the Soviet 7.62x54 were developed for precision work and mimic our 30.06 and .308. The 7.62x39 is a relatively short cartridge case, but packs an effective punch.

November 17, 2010
The BHI Hand Guard System is the heart of the BHI-15 (S) rifle's lightweight, streamlined profile and mission modularity. Made of aluminum, this mid-length hand guard allows the barrel to "free float" for maximum accuracy and improved heat dissipation.

.308 Gives You the Longer-Range Edge

August 31, 2010
The .223 is a respectable cartridge for many applications, but can fall short at a longer-distance range for penetrating heavy media such as concrete, armor plating, and dense steel.

Smith & Wesson M&P15R

August 20, 2010

I'd like to discuss a somewhat unusual rifle choice that can help law enforcement agencies and individual officers realistically cope with the rising cost and shortage of .223/5.56 patrol rifle ammunition. I believe the solution to this problem is for law enforcement agencies to field the Smith & Wesson M&P15R M4-style carbine chambered in 5.45x39mm.

Colt Defense Law Enforcement Carbines

July 30, 2010

From experience I can say that the Colt LE6920 is an outstanding semi-automatic M4-style carbine. It's chambered in 5.56mm and incorporates Mil-Spec features in its design.

Engaging Suspects With Long Guns

July 26, 2010
Handguns may be smaller, portable, lighter, concealable and convenient, but they aren't always the best tool for the job. This has been proven again and again on the battlefields of the world and in police engagements throughout history.

West Memphis Officers Will Get AR-15s

July 1, 2010
Patrol officers will now be able to carry the rifles, which would not have prevented the duty deaths of two officers, but would have more quickly ended the standoff in the Wal-Mart parking lot.

Training with the M-4 is under way at the Police Academy, and the new weaponry will eventually be issued to every member of the El Paso PD, from patrol officers up to the chief.

Ruger's SR-556 Carbine

April 6, 2010

Ruger introduced its new SR-556 rifle at last year's National Rifle Association show in Phoenix. The announcement ended years of speculation that Ruger was indeed working on an AR-style rifle, and the SR-556 quickly became the buzz of the show. While the newest Ruger long gun possesses many typical AR features, it also has a Ruger-designed piston drive system. The patent-pending, chrome plated two-stage piston system provides a cleaner, cooler running, and more reliable operation than any standard AR gas impingement system can deliver. Read our full review of Ruger's SR-556.

Rock River Arms PPS Carbine

February 22, 2010

The Rock River Arms PPS carbine employs the company's patent-pending Performance Piston System (PPS) to reduce recoil, as well as residue in the upper receiver. It features a purpose-designed bolt carrier, an adjustable gas piston, and an over-the-barrel spring and guide rod arrangement. The result is a departure from the traditional recoil system associated with AR-style firearms. Rock River Arms is expected to offer its PPS carbine to law enforcement later in 2010; the rifle carries a suggested retail price of $1,685.
