One Book You'll Want To Read

January 10, 2012

Your Just Deserts

December 6, 2011

As a student of human performance I am always amazed at the way we pay lip service to the winning mindset. It seems we think that if we just say this or that to ourselves, or visualize ourselves doing this or that, we will become winners. Simple, right? Wrong.

Practical Tactical Thinking

November 9, 2011
As you gain more experience, you'll gain a patrol sixth sense that's not available on the internet with shipping and handling added. It's something that develops, and those who have it never quit developing it.

Handling Threats: "I'm Going to Kill You!"

October 10, 2011

Most threats against police officers are verbal threats used to control, harass, and intimidate the officer. But situations involving threats at the next level—where violence is a grave possibility—are different.

Can You Show Feelings and Stay Strong?

July 21, 2011

I have always been touched by certain images, sounds, and words, and the older I get the more things trigger my emotional reflexes. At the same time I find I am less and less embarrassed by my tears. Now I know the tears are not from weakness but from respect, from the heart.

Facing the Realities of Life

July 11, 2011
The cruelty of man toward his fellow man never ceases to amaze me. How and what some do to others is sad, senseless, and boggles my mind at times. You've got to deal with it and drive on with a grip on reality.

Entering a Male-Dominated Profession

June 2, 2011
As long as your agency isn't Neanderthal-dominated, you should be successful. Your best chance at being accepted and successful is to be absolutely competent.

Setting Goals: Aim High

May 16, 2011
A trusted firearms instructor recently expressed frustration with the recruits at his academy. Because some aren't natural shooters, he must constantly remind them that every shot is aimed. Projectiles don't miraculously appear on the target. The fundamentals are the same for each shot: you aim each one.

A Good Argument for Thinking Some Very Bad Thoughts

March 29, 2011
I thought it was universally understood throughout our profession that when we fail to train, we train for failure.

Self Talk: Taking Charge of Your Internal Dialogue

January 28, 2011
If you're like most people, you likely discovered that some of those conversations were very positive and upbeat, while others were very negative. The positive, upbeat conversations are reflective of those areas of our life where you have a positive self image.

If Looks Could Kill…

December 14, 2010
Many people who probably could have kicked my ass backed down simply because they thought I was meaner and tougher than I was simply because I acted like it.

Illusion of Confidence

October 31, 2010

The scary part is when we ourselves are confidently wrong we're completely oblivious to it.

What Rattles Your Cage?

September 24, 2010
Every recruit has their inner fears or phobias. They must be addressed and not suppressed. Much like the monster that was under your bed as a child, they will haunt you.

Do You Want to Win or Just Survive?

September 14, 2010
It's crucial for law enforcement officers to understand the power of words. It is not just semantics. It is often the difference between programming your subconscious for success or for failure. In some cases, it can be the difference between life and death.

Warrior Wisdom

August 31, 2010

What does it mean to be a good warrior? Courage? Justice? Wisdom? Benevolence? Psychology professor Charles Hackney answers these questions and others with "Martial Virtues," which includes lessons from the "world's greatest warriors." The book also explores the role of martial arts in character development.

Your Subconscious Mind

August 24, 2010
In order for law enforcement professionals to effectively use the skills, tactics and equipment provided to them, they must first prepare and condition their minds.

Know Your Limitations

August 23, 2010
One of my former defensive tactics instructors taught me a valuable lesson about sizing up an opponent. He asked me if I had ever seen a Japanese tea cup and what is different about it?

Bringing Sunshine To Dark Souls

August 18, 2010
Even though it's painful to go to a scene where personal tragedy from our past is brought front and center, it's actually what makes being an officer, especially a female officer, so worthwhile.

The Bureaucratic Touch

August 10, 2010

We put high sensation-seeking folks like you in a highly structured bureaucracy and are shocked when it stresses the heck out of you.

Problem Solving

August 9, 2010

Though there are many decision-making formats, there is one common component that is more important than any other: defining the problem you are trying to solve. One of the key ways to do so is by framing.
