Cpl. Bruce McKay of the Franconia (N.H.) Police Department ended his watch on May 11, 2007. McKay stopped a suspect after a brief pursuit. After being pepper sprayed, the suspect shot the officer four times, killing him. The suspect then ran over the officer. A civilian intervened and shot the suspect with the officer's service weapon.
On Jan. 21, Charleston County (S.C.) Sheriff's Deputy Jeffrey DeGrow responded to a burglary call and was shot six times, including one in his right eye. DeGrow kept his calm while radioing in his position and a suspect description even as he was gravely wounded. The NLEOMF named DeGrow its Officer of the Month for May.
