Sgt. Kenneth Vann, 48, was killed without warning at about 2:12 a.m. as he sat in his cruiser at a red light on the East Side of San Antonio. Vann was a patrol supervisor and 24-year member of the force.

Woman Guns Down Ore. Motor Officer During Pursuit
Officer Chris Kilcullen, a 12-year veteran of the force, had pulled alongside the 1998 Buick Skylark driven by Cheryl Kidd, 56, at a red light in Springfield. When Kilcullen, 43, motioned to Kidd to pull over, the woman pulled out a handgun and opened fire, fatally wounding the officer.

Lighting The Way
More than 25 years ago I enlisted in the Air Force Reserve as a security policeman. Back then a duty light was the two “D” cell, right angle light. If you were able to track down the straight version, man you were on the cutting edge of light technology. It wasn’t long after I arrived back home to my unit that we got really high tech with the arrival of the Mag Lite. This was like introducing the centerfire cartridge to an infantryman.
