The new body armor (MN01 Type IIIA) is a thin, flexible design that features a hybrid of DuPont Kevlar advanced-fiber ballistic materials. Sgt. James Timothy Chapin, a 26-year veteran, was shot in the head during a foot pursuit with the suspect, whose Kevlar vest protected him from numerous police bullets. A bullet from the suspect struck a second officer, Lorin Johnston, in his ballistic vest.

DuPont has announced production expansion plans for its high performance Kevlar para-aramid brand fiber. DuPont plans to invest over $500 million in a multi-phase production expansion starting with a Kevlar polymer expansion in Richmond, Va., later this year.

Kevlar XP typically provides a 15 percent reduction in backface deformation and at least a 10 percent lighter weight vest design against the most challenging National Institute of Justice (NIJ) level IIIA threat, a .44 Magnum bullet.
