Most handlers keep their dogs after the animal is retired from active duty. The bond between a handler and "man's best friend" is truly unique. The Memorial Fund announced Monday in its 2019 Preliminary End-of-Year Law Enforcement Fatalities Report that 128 federal, state, local, tribal and territorial officers died in the line of duty over the past year, representing an 18% decrease over the 157 officers who died in the line of duty in 2018.
