Walther Police Pistol Slim (PPS)

April 1, 2008

I was really impressed with the 9mm model of the PPS. Its captive dual recoil spring and excellent ergonomics combine to make an extremely soft shooting pistol. In fact, it's the softest shooting subcompact pistol that I have ever tested.

Kahr PM45

March 1, 2008

Its slim measurements and short height make the PM45 perfect for its intended role as a concealed carry gun. Despite its diminutive size and light weight, this pistol is controllable and effective. Kahr has redefined the criteria by which we judge concealable handguns.

Ruger SR9 Pistol

February 1, 2008

The SR9 is not just "another striker-fired, polymer frame, 9mm pistol," but a combination of many features that have proven their practicality over the years and new features that police officers and shooters have been asking for but have not yet been offered in a production handgun.

FNH USA PS90 Carbine

January 1, 2008

Like the full-auto P90, the PS90 TR is completely ambidextrous and is blowback in operation. The gun also features a downward ejection of empty cases. But what allows the P90 and PS90 to be so effective yet lightweight is the cartridge that they fire: the 5.7 x 28mm.

Kel-Tec PF-9 Pistol

December 1, 2007

For undercover police work or even off-duty use, a small gun that can easily be concealed yet fires a reasonably powerful cartridge is essential. Kel-Tec has recently introduced its PF-9, which the company touts as the slimmest and lightest 9mm semi-auto handgun on the market.

Bushmaster Gas Piston Rifle

November 1, 2007

Sometimes operators and officers don't take care of their weapons like they should. That's why so many companies have been working on developing a cleaner M16/M4 design. And it's why Bushmaster recently developed the M4 variant that it calls the "Gas Piston Rifle."

Taurus PT1911B Semi-Auto Pistol

October 1, 2007

The PT1911, like other handguns in the Taurus line, sports a lot of really nice "custom" features, it is made from high-quality components and, best of all, it's affordably priced at around $703. Here's my up close and personal look at this gun.

Para-Ordnance Carry 9 LDA

September 1, 2007

The Canadian firm of Para-Ordnance has been a trailblazer when it comes to improving the classic 1911 pistol. One of the company's most radical concepts is the Light Double Action (LDA) trigger mechanism, which can be found on its new Carry 9 LDA.

Smith & Wesson M&P15T Tactical Carbine

August 1, 2007

Although Smith & Wesson is one of our oldest and largest surviving gun companies, the iconic manufacturer is a relative newcomer when it comes to tactical rifles. The only problem that I've heard associated with the S&W rifles is their availability. It seems that demand far exceeds supply. Just recently, I received the test sample that I had ordered at last year's seminar.

Glock G21SF Semi-Automatic Pistol

July 1, 2007

Most officers who carry Glock pistols will know exactly what I mean when I say that the new Glock G21SF is "...just a Glock." But such flippancy should in no way be taken as a negative comment because one of the line's most positive features is that once you know how to use one Glock, you know how to use all of them.

Smith & Wesson M&P Compact Pistol

June 1, 2007

During my law enforcement career I never had a malfunction or a problem with any of the Smith & Wesson pistols that I owned or was issued. Needless to say, I like Smith & Wesson pistols.

DPMS Panther Arms LRT-SASS Rifle

May 1, 2007

Simply put, the LRT-SASS is an AR-15 on steroids. It is larger in size, larger in caliber, and heavier in weight. The LRT-SASS I used for this review arrived in a padded “gun case” with the owner’s manuals, two 19-round magazines, one LRT with four position handguards with covers, Mangonel front/rear flip-up sights, a sling, and a Harris bipod—all in all, a ready-to-use package.

Springfield Armory EMP Compact 1911

April 1, 2007

The new Springfield 1911 is not just an attenuated version of the standard 1911 but a true small pistol. The Enhanced Micro Pistol (EMP) was radically re-engineered specifically for the concealed carry market, making it an attractive weapon for detectives or for off-duty carry.

Smith & Wesson SW1911PD Semi-Auto Pistol

March 1, 2007

I think that you'll have to agree that there is a certain amount of irony in seeing a 1911 wearing the S&W logo. After all, it was Colt that brought the gun to market and produced millions for the military and for civilian consumption. But S&W didn't just copy the original design. It has made some changes to the time-honored 1911 to update the gun.

SIG Sauer SP2022

February 1, 2007

SIG’s new 2022 pistol isn’t the first sidearm to have a polymer frame, but it’s a welcome addition to a new tradition of sidearms that has continued to grow in popularity.

ArmaLite AR-24 and AR-24K Pistols

January 1, 2007

ArmaLite has long been known for its innovative and trendsetting rifle designs. Now, for the first time in its storied existence, there is a pistol that wears the ArmaLite name.

Scattergun Technologies Tactical Response TR-870 Shotgun

December 1, 2006

Bill Wilson’s improvements on the popular and reliable Remington 870 upgrade it for tactical use. Called the Tactical Response TR-870, this shotgun possesses a host of common sense modifications.

Sabre Defence XR15A3 Massad Ayoob Elite Rifle

November 1, 2006

Prolific firearms writer, weapons instructor, and law enforcement officer Massad Ayoob has spent his professional career analyzing the dynamics of police work. Now Sabre Defence, a relatively new manufacturer of AR-15-style weapons, has introduced the Massad Ayoob XR15A3 Elite Rifle. Built in collaboration with the famed expert, the carbine has all of the features that savvy law enforcement officers need and want.

Kahr Arms CW9 Compact Pistol

October 1, 2006

The latest Kahr model, the CW9, is an excellent example of a reliable, compact semi-auto, and it makes an excellent backup or off-duty weapon.

Kel-Tec PLR-16 .223 Handgun

September 1, 2006

Can an AR-style pistol really hold up to combat conditions? The rugged and accurate PLR-16 can.
