Wet Weather Wear

What should you consider when looking at outerwear for duty or most any foul weather? First, versatility. Because quality outerwear is expensive, it needs to serve for at least three seasons out of the year. The second item to consider is whether the outer jacket is truly waterproof or just water resistant; there is nothing worse than being cold and wet. Last is the price. If the clothing breaks the bank it will cause issues.

So what did I find from the major vendors for base layers? There are base layers from cotton, various polyester/Lycra blends, wool blends, and layers for cold or hot weather. The choices seem to be endless.

While giving waterproof jackets a "test wearing," I have had input from several members of my local department and from guys I shoot with. Elbeco Inc. received the 2009 State Use Program Partnership Award for its work with Headwaters, Inc., a not-for-profit work/rehabilitation center that helps people with developmental and physical disabilities find gainful employment. Elbeco and Headwaters partnered on a contract to provide the State of Wisconsin with correctional officer uniforms. Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle presented the award in a ceremony at the state capitol July 9.
