New Ala. Law Criminalizes Attacks On Police Dogs
The law makes it a misdemeanor to harass or interfere with a police or search and rescue dog in the performance of its duties. Harassment could include distracting a dog by shouting, throwing an object, shining a flashlight or tossing out food.

Dealing with Vicious Dogs
Law enforcement training covers practically every conceivable aspect of use of force. However, an area that is glossed over by many agencies is policy, training, and tactics for dealing with vicious dogs. Vicious dog attacks account for more than 100 fatalities and thousands of serious injuries every year. Police are usually the first responders to vicious dog reports and are often attacked by these dogs.

New Customs Explosive Detector Dog Named “Sirius” After K-9 Killed on 9/11
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is deploying a new canine explosive detector team to the field that has a special connection to keeping people in the New Jersey area safe. CBP K-9 “Sirius,” a Black Labrador retriever born on September 23, 2004, at the CBP Canine Enforcement Training Center (CETC), received her name to honor the only working dog that died in World Trade Center attacks.

Without formal training, police must rely on their preservation instinct and use whatever force is deemed necessary against attacking dogs. While lethal force is acceptable, it's a last resort. There's a less-lethal alternative that's proven effective, one I've personally employed countless times and highly recommend.
