Police Dogs
Law enforcement agencies typically purchase K-9s from trainers or dealers who acquire them from Europe, where legacy blood lines have been long established. Breeds most commonly used for detection and apprehension include the Belgian Malonois, German Shepherd, Dutch Shepherd, and a variety of Labradors. Dogs can be single purpose (for apprehensions) or dual purpose for apprehensions and detection for narcotics, explosives, or cadavers. Read "K-9 Training Challenges" for more detail. Planned Operations and Dogs
Some SWAT teams have become very adept at using non-lethal tools to neutralize the threat presented by dogs. Retired Cleveland SWAT entry team leader Robert O'Brien says that long before the Hells Angels case and its nearly $2 million in settlements his SWAT team always considered the presence of dogs in its planning. O'Brien's tool of choice for getting the dogs out of the way was the fire extinguisher.

Dog Days of Summer (Part 3): Less-Lethal vs. Vicious Dogs
Without formal training, police must rely on their preservation instinct and use whatever force is deemed necessary against attacking dogs. While lethal force is acceptable, it's a last resort. There's a less-lethal alternative that's proven effective, one I've personally employed countless times and highly recommend.

Dealing with Vicious Dogs
Law enforcement training covers practically every conceivable aspect of use of force. However, an area that is glossed over by many agencies is policy, training, and tactics for dealing with vicious dogs. Vicious dog attacks account for more than 100 fatalities and thousands of serious injuries every year. Police are usually the first responders to vicious dog reports and are often attacked by these dogs.

Protecting Police Dogs From Fentanyl
Fentanyl is 30 to 50 times more potent than heroin—so deadly that just a few inhaled grains can cause an overdose. (A few human police officers have been hospitalized after accidentally inhaling puffs of the substance.) That can be a problem when sniffing is a police dog’s primary mode of detective work.
