For every minute that goes by without defibrillation, a cardiac arrest victim's chance of survival decreases by about 10 percent. After 10 minutes without defibrillation, attempts at resuscitation are unlikely to succeed.

Although ambulances are equipped with these devices, you, as a first responder, will probably get to a person suffering from Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) before EMTs can respond. And certainly before the patient can get to a hospital with a crash cart.
