White collar criminals, mostly based in foreign countries, have begun targeting police departments with “ransomware”—software that infects a computer and overwrites data, making a system inaccessible unless the user pays a ransom via Bitcoin.

U.S. Border Patrol Team Wins 2007 5.11 Challenge
The finals for the 2007 5.11 Challenge were the closest in the competition's four-year history. After eight weeks of competitive shooting in Montana, the two-man U.S. Border Patrol team from Alamogordo, N.M., squeezed out first place with the last shot of the event.

5.11 Challenge Finalists Donate Prizes to Agencies Hit By Hurricanes
The finalists of the 2005 5.11 Challenge elected to donate their prizes, amounting to more than $175,000 worth of gear, weapons, and apparel, to agencies devastated by the recent Gulf hurricanes. To match this generosity, the sponsors of the annual law enforcement shooting competition have agreed to provide the hurricane-ravaged agencies with an additional $350,000 worth of products.
