U.S. District Judge Larry Burns on Thursday sentenced Tucson shooter Jared Loughner to seven consecutive life terms plus 140 years, calling the sentence "astronomical" and "justified" because Loughner "knew what he was doing" when he killed six and wounded 13 at a 2011 congressional event sponsored by then-U.S. Rep. DOJ Set to Release 6,000 Prisoners from Federal Prison
The panel estimated that its change in sentencing guidelines eventually could result in 46,000 of the nation’s approximately 100,000 drug offenders in federal prison qualifying for early release. The 6,000 figure, which has not been reported previously, is the first tranche in that process.

Police Trainer of Verbal Judo Dies
George Thompson, the English professor-turned-street cop who taught law enforcement professionals the art of verbally redirecting negative behavior, has died. Thompson, known as "Doc" to those trained in his methodology, died Tuesday at his home in Auburn, N.Y. He was 69.
