Sgt. Norman Benjamin, 47, was taken to The MED in extremely critical condition, and is expected to survive the encounter. Sgt. Benjamin was shot in his unmarked police vehicle. The 14-year veteran is assigned to the auto-theft bureau.

Gang members, especially juveniles, receive little incarceration and lots of probation for car crimes. To gang members this is like a dog with rubber teeth, lots of bark but no bite. Almost every gang member I came in contact with in East Los Angeles and South Central Los Angeles had several prior convictions for some type of car theft.

Officers followed the Acura several blocks. After crossing into Denver, the officers performed a PIT maneuver in order to stop the pursuit. The Acura made an evasive move and ended up on a snowbank.
