The small town of Garden City (MO)—located about 50 miles southeast of Kansas City—disbanded its entire police force Wednesday, saying that the chief received word that he was instructed by the city council to lay off 100 percent of their police department effective immediately.

The New York Police Department has taken what Police Commissioner Dermot Shea called a "seismic shift" in the agency's policing, disbanding the plainclothes anti-crime teams and reassigning those officers to other duties.

California City Disbands Police Force
The City Council voted in late June to disband its 85-year-old agency to save nearly two-thirds of next year's $3.5-million budget shortfall. The department has 32 employees. The sheriff's office, which has 462 deputies, has agreed to offer full-time jobs to all San Carlos officers.

A third city in San Mateo County, Calif., has elected to dissolve its police department and contract services to the sheriff's department. In the past year, the sheriff has contracted with San Carlos and Half Moon Bay after those cities dissolved their forces.
