New Mexico Chief Wants Text Tips

The interim chief of the Carlsbad (N.M.) Police Department has introduced a program allowing tipsters to submit anonymous text messages via cell phones to law enforcement agencies.

Twin Cities Cops Add Cell Phone Alerts to Arsenal

Today, Minneapolis and St. Paul officially start Nixle, a service that provides information over cell phones by text message, e-mail and on the Web. More than 1,000 law enforcement agencies now use Nixle, including Los Angeles, Chicago and Baltimore. Unlike services such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter, Nixle doesn't allow unauthenticated information to be communicated.

New Orleans City Council Expected to Approve NOPD's Request for Summer Overtime Pay

The New Orleans City Council is today expected to pass an ordinance that would give the Police Department an extra $1 million to pay for longer shifts the rest of the summer.

Oakland Council Proposes 10% Cut to Police Budget

On the verge of closing a $83 million budget shortfall, members of Oakland City Council have proposed slashing 10 percent from the Police Department's personnel budget. The move would cut nearly $12 million from the general fund budget and account for the single largest reduction in the budget proposal that's up for approval on Tuesday, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
