Seattle Police Chief Kathleen O’Toole will step down at the end of the year, Mayor Jenny Durkan announced Monday, ending months of speculation about O’Toole’s future amid a tumultuous time in city government.

“More than anything, I’ve loved being a cop,” O’Toole said during a news conference Monday morning. “To me, it's not just a job, it’s my vocation, it’s my passion.”

O’Toole will leave her post on Dec. 31, and Deputy Chief Carmen Best will serve as interim chief beginning Jan. 1, Durkan said during the news conference.

Durkan said she plans a nationwide search for a new chief, to be led by a hand-picked committee headed by four co-chairs. She called the selection of a police chief “one of the most important decisions a mayor can make,” the Seattle Times reports.

When will these mayors stop choosing Chief's on the basis or PC and politics? This Chief was chosen for those very reasons due to her PC, her sex and her being an "outsider". All of which at the time was a load of crap. They passed over more qualified persons from within the department to "fix' and "reshape" the SPD. Well didn't work out so well did it? this happens time and time again when they choose these "leaders" based on their sex, race and PC "qualifications" rather on being a cop. The best selection is one from within that knows the department and is respected by the line officers, providing there isn't systemic corruption etc, the "outsiders" never really make any quality changes for the better, ever. These "nation wide selected candidates " are juts a bunch of politicians wearing blue telling the Mayors what they want to hear and play musical chairs with these large departments. Stop listening to political rhetoric, anti cop groups and PC crap and chose a COP to lead!

[email protected] You make a lot of good points but the Seattle area has become so liberal as of late that its going to take a bunch more than a new Police Chief to straighten things out.
