VIDEO: Ballistic Vest Saves GA Officer Shot on Patrol

A Jackson (GA) Police Department officer is recovering at home after being shot in the vest early Tuesday morning while on patrol.

Police Chief James Morgan says Officer Sherry Hall was patrolling after midnight in the area of Walker Street and Camellia Court when she saw a man on the side of the road, reports WMAZ.

Hall approached the man, he argued with her, and Hall was shot in the abdomen area of her vest.

"As far as we know it was one shot, possibly five, from the perpetrator and Officer Hall was able to fire at least two rounds from her service revolver," says Morgan.

Hall was wearing a ballistic vest and Morgan says that probably saved her life.

"For incidents like this, a lot of times that vest is more than a bulletproof vest. It saves accidents in trauma. It's been known to be a good support against weapons as well. It's a good safety feature," he said. "She suffered a deep bruise from the impact" of the bullet, Morgan said, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

According to Morgan, there is no evidence that the suspect was struck by a bullet. He ran from the scene.
