Residents of Small South Carolina Town Rally Behind Fired Lesbian Police Chief

The Latta, S.C., Town Council voted last week to stop Mayor Earl Bullard from hiring a new police chief to replace the community's beloved former chief he recently fired. Chief Crystal Moore claims she was fired for being a lesbian. Bullard says Moore's sexual orientation was not a factor in the firing.

Despite the vote, the mayor is proceeding with a search for a new chief.

Councilman Jarett Taylor told SC Now that the council’s vote this week was to stop any hiring of a new chief for at least 60 days, which falls after the June 24 referendum in which voters will decide whether to change the town’s form of government from strong mayor-weak council to strong council-weak mayor. Taylor and other members of council said the change would allow them to reverse Bullard’s firing of Moore and reinstate her.

But even if Bullard did fire Moore because of her sexual orientation, he’d legally be within his rights. In 29 states, including South Carolina, it is legal for employers to fire workers based on their sexual orientation.

Moore has filed a grievance with the town, and she said she will continue to fight for her job.

The Huffington Post reports that last Wednesday dozens of residents picketed outside of town hall calling for Moore's job to be reinstated; Moore came by too, to thank them. Others in the town, which has a population of just over 1,400, held a prayer virgil for Moore who has served Latta for more than 20 years.

Kept the peace and the people backed you? Good work, Chief. If the PD has accepted one penny of federal funds during your term, check John Baker v City of New Iberia, Louisiana, circa 2009, EEOC administrative case law, and see that someone has already fought and won your battle around 2009, and the City gets you or pays you a lot of money if the Mayor tries to dictate sexual orientation after hours. Unless they release the real reasons she was terminated, the sexual orientation of the Chief is simply a Bi-Product of what the news wants to report and what the people want to believe. Unfortunately she wants to make the accusation as well, which could be a tactic to fight for her job. However it is a poor tactic,,,and as stated, until the real reasons are brought to the attention of the public(if it is not an on going investigation), nobody will know...If it does in fact come to light that she was terminated due to her orientation, then shame on them for doing such a thing...

If she was fired for reasons other than being gay, they had better be good and provable reasons or their is going to be one expensive lawsuit that his honor the mayor is going to be very sorry for.

If she was fired for her sexual orientation, I hope she sues the pants of them and wins. But the real question is if there is more than meets the eye about this?

You should judge a person by his/her charter not their sexual orientation. If she is doing a good job back off and let her do her job. The town of Latta please continue to stand up for what is right!!!!!!!!

This mayor (?) needs to go. He has stated his dislike for gays in 'phone interviews to the press and others. Here is a good Cop who the town supports and has done so for twenty years being fired by a pipsqueek who has been in office less the six months. I had hoped that the beatifull state of South Carolina had emerged from the dimwitted days of yore, but it looks like there is still some holdouts. Sock it to 'em Chief and get back to serving your town, as they obviously want you back. Blues, Stay Safe.

I hope the firing was not over her being lesbian. That would be stupid. That's her business. I suggest we all stand by to see the other side.. Isn't that what a smart cop does? I puffington post jumping on this does bother me some, tho' . What a rag...

It Characterizes Christians as Stupid and Weak. All the while it glamorizes the Gay Lifestyle. It's ironic that everyone is willing to defend someone based on Sexual Orientation. But looks the other way when Conservatives are being persecuted by the BLM! What about Investigating and asking questions? Trayvon was Sainted by the Media? You don't think HP picks Winners & Losers? They throw War Vets away like TRASH, but build up Illegal Alien Invaders! I'm with Marshal Fine. This person has wise words!

The Media covers up Gay False Flag attacks. You can watch Mark Dice. There have been many instances of Homosexuals, faking hate crimes etc. Then blaming others for their deeds. If the Mayor of Latta is wrong so be it. But don't judge TILL YOU SEE ALL THE FACTS FIRST!

According to the news report the State of South Carolina allows discrimination of against anyone because of their sexual orientation. So the Mayor broke no law against firing her for being a lesbian. This is the problem with backward southern states is they encourage sexual discrimination by not passing any laws against it. There is no doubt the Mayor is a bigot and that he based his firing on her being a lesbian but in his state he broke no laws. Also in a "right to work " state any police officer can be fired without showing "cause" for the firing. Under "right to work" laws like in Florida any one can be fired and the Agency does not have to prove any wrong doing of any kind. So those of you with contracts be thankful you have them because without one, your agency can stomp on all your rights just for the fun of it.
