A Coal City (Ill.) Police officer was killed early Saturday in a head-on collision while returning home from police training in an agency vehicle.

Heather Wandt, 30, was driving an agency-owned Chevrolet Lumina when she attempted to pass a semi-truck heading north on Illinois 47 shortly after midnight. Her vehicle struck a pickup truck head-on. Wandt was pronounced dead at the scene.

Wandt had just completed her fourth week of police training at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, reports the Beacon-News.

A memorial service has been scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Naperville, the agency announced.
