A 21-year-old man fatally shot a Denver Police Department officer while she attempted to break up a fight at a Sunday jazz concert.

Officer Celena Hollis succumbed to wounds from the shooting, which occurred shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday at the City Park Jazz concert. Police believe Rollen Oliver, 21, shot Officer Hollis in the head.

The officer was attempting to break up a fight, after the concert. Police believe the fight was caused by tensions between rival gang members, reports the Denver Post.

Officer Hollis transferred to the Denver P.D. on Oct. 3, 2005, after serving with the Detroit Police Department as a patrol officer and member of the Street Crime Attack Team (SCAT). She used her Critical Incident Training skills to de-escalate several hostile and potentially violent incidents, including successfully assisting an Iraqi war veteran who suffered from PTSD. Officer Hollis has been recognized numerous times for her service to the community.

Officer Hollis served as the president of the Denver P.D.'s Black Police Officers Organization. She is survived by her 12-year-old daughter.

"She was an amazing person with an engaging smile who was well liked and respected by her colleagues and the community she served," according to a department statement. "She will be missed."

What a tragic loss for not only her family and friends, but to all of us in LE. We have lost a wonderful sister who epitomizes what a LEO is supposed to be. She will be missed by many as her name goes down in history of both the Chicago and Denver Police Departments

Losing another faithful servant to a loser's actions is bad enough. Knowing this wonderful officer has a 12 year old daughter who will suffer the loss of her mother everyday makes it even worse. I hope her daughter never forgets her mother is a hero. And I hope her killer gets nut gangrene.

This is such a tragic incident. Is there or has there been a fund set up for the child?

Terrible lose of a true Officer. May you rest in peace Officer Hollis and may your daughter be well taken care of and grow with the love of her "blue" family.

What a terrible tragedy. I understand that this young lady was an exceptional example of who we really need in law enforcement and her loss is a loss for all of us. Our prayers are with her family. And as we continue to circle in the toilet bowl of society the only light at the end of the tunnel is this November.....get out and vote. And be safe.

Major Pickett @ 6/26/2012 7:21 AM

I am sorry for your loss and hope that the Justice System work in this case to prevent future Officers from being killed. I feel sorry for her daughter to have to grow up without her mother and i know what the police officer life is about, because i am one here in North Carolina.

Deana @ 6/26/2012 8:03 AM

Damn gangs. Wish every last dang one of the low lifes could be put behind bars where they belong or thrown in the river with a rock. Why don't they get a job like everyone else instead of being such a drain on society and causing so much violence and death.

C Mo @ 6/28/2012 6:48 AM

Condolences to the family and we are praying you all and especially for her innocent 12 year old daughter who now has to grow up without a mother...To the family I pray also for Peace and Justice..

Dennis @ 7/3/2012 7:42 AM

That's what happen when you let all this criminals go. If this politicians really want to save taxpayers money to free the so called low risk criminals we might as well shoot our self in the head because this gang members will take-over and the very politicians who had let them out might as well be the first victims.
