Calif. Sheriff Honors First Female Deputy

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department proclaimed Feb. 14 as a day honoring the county's first female sheriff's deputy. Ethel Meares was hired in 1955 and named employee of the year in 1963.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department proclaimed Feb. 14 as a day honoring the county's first female sheriff's deputy.

The date coincided with Ethel Meares' 100th birthday, reports the San Bernardino Sun.

Meares, a Colton native who now lives in Boise, Idaho, was 43 years old when she was hired by the Sheriff's Department in 1955.
