Lt. Todd Parkins, 38, was killed Wednesday when his shotgun accidentally went off inside his Cedar Crest home. He was standing near his wife and one of his sons when the gun went off.

South Carolina Police to Buy Practice Ammo with Donation

Off-Duty Chicago Cop Shot, Woman Killed in Apparent Robbery Attempt

When police arrived, they found Kathryn Romberg, 45, and Robert Soto, 49, an off-duty 23-year veteran of the Chicago police force, bleeding from gunshot wounds in what police call an attempted robbery. Romberg, who lived in an apartment only steps from where the vehicle was parked, was pronounced dead at the scene. Soto, a detective in the police bomb and arson division, remained in critical condition Wednesday night in Mt. Sinai Hospital.

The San Diego police dog left in the back of his handler's patrol car last month died of heatstroke, county investigators said yesterday, and it will be up to the District Attorney's Office whether it will charge the officer.
