Washington State Passes Ballot Measure to Further Regulate Guns

November 07, 2018  |

A state gun-regulations ballot measure seeking to make Washington's firearms laws among the strictest in the country passed Tuesday with 60% of the vote in election-night returns. Votes will continue to be counted in the coming days.

The sweeping 30-page measure will raise the legal age to buy semi-automatic rifles to 21. To obtain such weapons, people will need to pass an enhanced background check, take a training course and wait 10 business days after a purchase, reports the Seattle Times.

I-1639 also will enact a storage law. Gun owners who don't secure their firearms with devices such as a trigger lock or safe could be charged with gross misdemeanor or felony "community endangerment" crimes for allowing prohibited people (such as children) to access and display or use the weapons.

Proponents of the measure said I-1639 would address the root causes of many mass shootings and generally help to reduce gun violence.

I-1639 was the only state gun-regulations measure on the Nov. 6 ballot anywhere in the country.

How will they know if firearms aren't secured in someone's home? Furthermore, whether or not someone properly secures their weapons is not the "root cause" of many mass shootings. The "root cause" comes down to the individual who commits the crime and because of how these incidents have been sensationalized by the media.

So someone can join the armed forces at 18 then be trained on and issued a select fire assault rifle or squad automatic weapon or a rocket launcher or a mortar or a tank but when they are home on leave from serving their country they are told we're sorry youngster but it would be a criminal offense for you to buy or possess a semi automatic rifle because they are far too dangerous. Only in America.

Good thing Washington state has all of those law-abiding criminals that will read and abide by the new law.

Apparently the State of Washington has decided to be the new flag bearer for the Dumbing Down of America movement....how sad

Trigger @ 11/8/2018 10:13 AM

"Tom" you are being unfair to those poor misguided individuals who did not understand that the laws they unknowingly violated were for everyone. Why would you question that they would not understand this new law...?

As usual the law abiding citizens are being targeted yet again by those who are clueless. It is easier to blame the gun, as "Badge411" perfectly stated the "root cause" is not being addressed. The Second Amendment to our Great Constitution is becoming a joke in the eyes of many.

“If a responsible, mentally sound American wants to own and AR-15, that’s their right. Besides, when the zombies come…okay, you don’t like the zombie thing. When the Chinese invade our country, who do you want to depend on? The over-extended police force and the National Guard? Or the next door neighbor who’s a former Marine and has enough guns and ammunition for your entire block?”

The liberals in Wash are centered around king Co. and Seattle and have the most votes to override others in the state who know the criminals wont obey new laws anymore than they will old ones. In the recent shooting case in Calif the shooter was reportedly armed with a glock and extended magazines. He obviously could care less about any law that restricts the number of rounds he can have when he is about to murder numerous people. The liberals don't get it and never will and one reason why is so important to do what we can to protect the 2nd amendment. Without a doubt the liberals will take away your gun rights if they can.

Good luck citizens of Washington in getting your locked up firearm into play before the intruders get you. The Police cannot always be there in time to save you. A sad but true statement. 38 YR. TX LEO
