California State Senate Approves Sweeping New Gun Control Laws

May 19, 2016  |

The state Senate on Thursday approved sweeping new restrictions on using guns in California in response to the December mass shooting by two terrorists that left 14 dead in San Bernardino, reports the Los Angeles Times.

Lawmakers approved 11 bills including measures mandating background checks for Californians buying ammunition and outlawing the manufacture and sale of semiautomatic rifles with detachable magazines.

The bills, which next go to the Assembly for consideration, represent the most ambitious effort at gun control in decades in California, which already has some of the strictest gun laws in the nation.

Gun bills have traditionally had a harder time in the Assembly, but Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon said this week he is committed to pushing them through. The bills also must pass muster with Gov. Jerry Brown, who has vetoed some gun control measures in the past that he felt were overreaching.

I approve of the background checks bill but the one that outlaws semiauto rifles with detachable magazines, why? I see no point in banning those weapons. We all know that criminals can still "illegally" buy them, in CA or in another state and bring them back. California is just getting really weird and I feel sorry for any LEO who has the misfortune to live and work there. Unfortunately the people who disapprove of this law will see the Police enforcing it and direct their anger at them instead of the California state government.

Have fun with that. I'm sure it will prevent more crime.

KevcopAz @ 5/19/2016 5:55 PM

A waste of time for the most part, wont prevent any crime and will only take away freedom and rights from the citizens. Im sure this will go to the USSC and in the end be over turned as unconstitutional. This is another reason why THIS presidential election is so very important that we get a conservative that will appoint a strict constitutionalist to replace Scalia and replace others during the next term. If you disagree with overt unconstitutional laws and judicial activism then you must vote conservative or you will be to blame for any additional loss of our rights (guns/Pro-life etc etc). DO NOT sit home and not vote.

Donald Trump @ 5/19/2016 6:10 PM

I agree (not really Trump) but Im guessing he would agree!

Tom Ret @ 5/19/2016 6:52 PM

Liberals believe that only if there is another gun law, surely violence will go down as gangs/criminals will be deterred. It apparently still hasn't dawned on them that criminals like the San Bernardino shooters, will not be dissuaded from murdering because they fear some firearm violation. The San Bernardino shooters aren't going to worry about violating guns laws anymore than laws against using pipe bombs. At the same time liberals effectively are trying to disarm the general law abiding public, they are letting felons out of prison on a wholesale basis or turning a blind eye to illegal immigration. Just recently, Las Vegas reported their homicide rate is increased significantly attributed to gang members who are now in their area but who had been released from California prisons. Trump says if you can get a concealed weapons license it should be honored in all 50 states. I agree. This will have a better chance of stemming crime than more gun laws that the hardened criminals ignore.

Bob peterson @ 5/19/2016 8:05 PM

If I'm not mistaken, California has always been screwed up. I hope people fight these new laws with all their might. One day justice will prevail. One day law abiding people will have the rights that criminals and homosexuals have. Let's take back our world.

Sheriffs Explorer Sgt. @ 5/19/2016 8:51 PM

I agree with Trump supporter and Donald Trump. We really need to elect Trump! He's the ONLY candidate who'll even try to make a difference. Criminals hate him because he's going to be tougher on crime than the old fart our Country elected TWICE IN A ROW! Homosexuals hate him because he'll likely make some law that'll hurt their feelings. Illegals hate him because he'll take away their benefits and ship them back where they belong. HE'S DEFINITELY GETTING MY VOTE!

James Bullock @ 5/20/2016 7:15 AM

That's it. Steal more of our freedoms. The idiots running this country trample all over the constitution daily. Our forefathers that wrote the constitution had the insight to see years into the future that we would need those freedoms that are set in the 1st and 2nd amendments to be able to stop this tyrannical government that we have now.

Brian @ 5/20/2016 9:59 AM

Yes, this will stop the terrorist. People of California, WAKE UP!!! You are lead by Knuckle Heads!

RandyGT50 @ 5/20/2016 10:10 AM

Wow, everyone commenting here is making good points. I'm proud of you all. Since the country has been going in the wrong direction, I'm with all of you. Everyone who hates Trump seems to be anti-american in my view. So that makes me want to vote for Trump all the more. He's got my vote.

It is absolutely imperative that we push for 50 state carry. Its so ridiculous that I'm a potential hero in one state and just because I drive to another state I become a felon because of my choice in firearms. I'm usually not for the Feds getting involved but this instance we need them too.

ssc1911 @ 5/21/2016 7:15 AM

How stupid, politicians are once again blaming the gun and not the persons involved in this killing as the problem as was their belief in jihad against this country.
Sadly California already has some of the strictest gun laws in the country, those laws didn't prevent the San Bernadino shooting form occurring. The politicians that are anti gun have no clue about guns, crime etc. Also ridiculous is background on ammo sales. Banning a gun with a detachable magazine . Anti gun politicians are nothing but Subversives wanting to destroy the Second Amendment. NJ is no better with its gun laws either.

LEO (RET) @ 5/23/2016 5:42 PM

What a special group of idiots. Y'awl really take pride in stupidity. Let us all know how that works out for you. Whew, what morons.

Ordinary Joe @ 5/25/2016 6:15 AM

Let's see, none of those people who were shot had a gun. None of the people in the Paris night club who were shot had guns. In fact, none of the victims in any of the recent attacks had guns. So, with all the intelligence that Californian socialists can muster, they decide to ban guns and invite more displaced Syrian refugees into their state along with all the narco terrorists along the southern border. From the headline, I thought they were going to relaxing their laws so that citizens could protect themselves.

Hmmmm. Seems like they are really trying to make the population victims and want to avoid lawsuits from bad guys when they get shot in return.
