Colorado School District Buys 10 Semi-Automatic Rifles

April 19, 2016  |

They aren't police officers but a Colorado school district will soon have the same weapons carried by law enforcement. The Douglas County School District purchased 10 semi-automatic rifles for its armed patrol division, reports KMGH.

The $12,300 spent on guns and equipment came out of the school's security budget. The firearms are made by Bushmaster but district officials declined to comment on the specific model or magazine capacity.

"I can say from lessons learned and looking at all the situations that have happened across the country with shootings that having the correct tools, having the long rifles have helped out in situations," said Rich Payne, Director of Safety and Security for Douglas County Schools. He continued, "It's unfortunate but this is where we have come to."

According to the district, all eight armed security officers have law enforcement experience and already carry handguns. They will undergo 20 hours of training with the sheriff's department before the guns are deployed. The district expects some of those guns will be handed out this month.

Good. If an active shooter starts shooting up a school I want the Security officers to be able to have the weapons capability to take out the shooter.

Percy, they're buying these guns so their security officers will be well enough armed to TAKE OUT AN ACTIVE SHOOTER. Contrary to the trolls belief, school shootings do happen and SROs and school security need to be well armed just in case.

Hmmm, I wonder how long this comment will last? Anyway, thanks to the moderator for removing Percy's most stupid comments. I hope it'll be happening a lot more.

percy, are you gay or something? The way you keep referring to everyone as "sweetie" or "sweetheart" makes me wonder.

Everyone needs to play nice. Remember opinions are like ***holes, everybody has one. All people are entitled to their opinions, one of the fundamental rights of living in this country. As police officers we are expected to protect all citizens, as well as treat them all with the respect that we often don't get. Now having said this, here is my opinion: Only a good guy with a gun, can stop a bad guy with a gun. I have said it for years and after all most of these folks are already armed with handguns. Can't remember where it was, but a few years ago a school administrator, think he was the principal, stopped a active shooter event, by retrieving his model 1911 out of the trunk of his personal car and confronting the shooter, who then surrendered. This happened, so how would that school have been safer, if he didn't have that gun?
